Getty 25 Family Festival at the Getty Center


This summer, the Getty celebrated its 25th anniversary in ten neighborhoods throughout the County. This two-day family festival was the culmination of all ten festivals, including interactive workshops, dance, live music, spectacular processions, and art experiences selected from these diverse and unique communities as well as a new immersive outdoor video experience. This two day festival at the Getty Center on September 17th and 18th included representation from Crenshaw, Inglewood, Koreatown, Lincoln Heights/East LA, Long Beach, Pacoima, Reseda, San Gabriel Valley, Watts, and Wilmington!

SATURDAY

Philosophy & DJ SOULO – Courtyard Stage
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

A native of Long Beach, Philosophy is a poet and the Emcee for today's events. He has poetry slammed throughout the states, staking he's claim with the #1 Love Poem in the Nation and co-writing the #1 Political Poem in the Nation. He is performing alongside native Los Angeles DJ – DJ SOULO.

Xipe Totec – Courtyard Stage
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Lazaro Arvizu and his group, Xipe Totec, teach and preserve the Azteca dance tradition. Wearing elaborately feathered, beaded, and embroidered attire, Xipe Totec performs excerpts from Aztec rituals dating back 500 years. These performances include singing, dancing, chanting, and the use of traditional Aztec instruments. 

'Ohana Hula – Top of Garden
Family Hawaiian Dance Workshop 
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Join master Hula instructor Kumu Keali'i O'Nalani to learn about Hawaiian culture - its art, its identity, its language, and its sense of `ohana through the art of Hula.

Masanga Marimba Ensemble – Courtyard Stage
12:15 PM - 1:00 PM

Upbeat, danceable, and family-oriented, Masanga Marimba plays traditional and popular music from Africa and Latin America. The word "Masanga'' comes from an African word that means the coming together of rivers or roads representing the meeting of African, Latin and American traditions in this group. The sight and sound of Masanga's giant marimbas is unlike anything you've ever seen or heard before.

Hwarang Nanta Drumming Group – Garden
1:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Members of the Hwarang Youth Foundation's Nanta Drumming Group will perform Korean rhythms and beats on the "nanta", a traditional Korean percussion instrument.

Keali'i O Nalani – Courtyard Stage
1:30 PM - 2:15 PM

Halau Hula Keali`i O Nalani, under the direction of Kumu Hula Keali`i Ceballos, believes that "Hula, onced learned, is to be shared". As a Kumu Hula, Keali`i emphasizes the importance of awareness. He strives to perpetuate Hawaiian culture - its art, its identity, its language, and its sense of `ohana. The halau serves as the vessel in which these legacies are taught and shared through hula.

Banda Las Angelinas – Courtyard Stage
3:00 PM - 3:45 PM

Banda Las Angelinas is a Banda Music band made up of women who are breaking the norms in a predominantly male-driven industry. Women united by passion for music with the goal of reaching the hearts of many people and helping the community with their talent. They started in East Los Angeles back in 2018 with only four members and three years later there are 14.

Rasputin's Marionettes – Top of Garden
3:45 PM - 4:15 PM

A family friendly, entertaining marionette variety show, with a cast of characters, singing and dancing their way into your heart. Rasputin's Marionettes is led by Matt Scott who has spent the past 20 years mastering the art of puppetry and pushing the envelope to create new and exciting performances for all ages.

LA Commons + S.H.I.N.E. Muwasi – Procession ending at Courtyard Stage
4:15 PM- 5:00 PM

The Procession of Masks led by LA Commons and S.H.I.N.E. Muwasi features giant masks and puppets, performers, and music that celebrates the ancestors and the art and culture of the African diaspora. LA Commons engages communities in the creation of public art that tells their unique stories and serves as the basis for dialogue, interaction, and a better understanding of Los Angeles.  S.H.I.N.E. Muwasi (in the hands of God), works with the intent & purpose to spread the knowledge of West African Drum culture to women in the community.

GR818ERS – Courtyard Stage

The San Fernando Valley's very own "The GR818ERS" will be hosting the festivities with MC Devious as our guide, and throughout the day they will be filling the air with musical sounds and groovy vibrations with JP Creative.

Plaza de la Raza Youth Mariachi Ensemble – Courtyard Stage
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

Plaza de la Raza's award-winning Plaza Youth Mariachi Ensemble is made up of a talented group of young musicians who participate in the center's School of Performing & Visual Arts Program. Plaza de la Raza's Youth Mariachi students are Cultural Ambassadors having performed on stages throughout Southern California.

Banning High School Mighty Marching Pilots – Procession ending at Courtyard Stage
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

The high-stepping, show-stopping Mighty Marching Pilots have been representing the city of Wilmington since 1976. The marching band is composed of over 100 students, and comes from Banning High School in Wilmington, CA.

Rasputin's Marionettes – Top of Garden

A family friendly, entertaining marionette variety show, with a cast of characters, singing and dancing their way into your heart. Rasputin's Marionettes is led by Matt Scott who has spent the past 20 years mastering the art of puppetry and pushing the envelope to create new and exciting performances for all ages.

House of Ghettiqué Drum & Drill – Courtyard Stage
12:00 PM - 12:30 PM

A high energy precision drill and dance team performs with exciting drum cadences and endless spirit. The House of Ghettiqué works to build up young girls through the performing arts and fashion, and teaches them important life skills and most of all respect, love, and dignity.

SGVCCA Dragon and Lion Dancers – Throughout the Garden and Courtyard
12:30 PM - 1:00 PM

The San Gabriel Valley Chinese Cultural Association was founded in 1968 and performs traditional exciting Chinese Lion and Dragon performances around Southern California. Watch these performers bring dragons to life as they dance through the Getty Center.

Modern Apsara Company – Courtyard Stage
1:00 PM - 1:45 PM

The Modern Apsara Company is a performing arts company dedicated to connecting the modern world to the magic of Cambodian classical dance. From performances, training, and workshops, they approach each occasion as a unique opportunity to showcase the beauty and resiliency of Cambodian art and traditions.

The Voices of Creation – Courtyard Stage
2:30 PM - 3:00 PM

The Voices of Creation are a community-based choir led by vocalist, songwriter, arranger, producer and mainstay of the Los Angeles scene Jimetta Rose. Made up of a multigenerational group of mainly non-professional singers backed by some of the city's finest musicians, their music marries hip strains of gospel with layers of jazz, soul and funk.

Kim Eung Hwa - Korean Dance Ensemble – Courtyard Stage
3:30 PM - 4:00 pm

The Kim Eung Hwa & Korean Dance Academy serves the greater community of its present location, in the heart of Koreatown, as it strives to preserve the art of Korean traditional dance and music. They perform a variety of traditional Korean dances and music across Los Angeles.

Ballet Folklórico Nueva Antequera & Maqueos Music – Procession ending at Courtyard Stage
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Ballet Folklórico Nueva Antequera was founded by Miriam Lopez and Raul Cortes in 1999. Its mission is to preserve and promote the traditional music and dance of Oaxaca. The mission of Maqueos Music Academy, founded by Estanislao Maqueos, is to create a place where children and young people can find a safe pastime while preserving their culture through music. Today, these two wonderful ensembles are collaborating to create a beautiful Oaxacan experience through music, dance and colorful celebration.
