Working closely with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Community Arts Resources (CARS) created a temporary urban overlay, dubbed Pop-Up Broadway, to demonstrate the power behind Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Great Streets Initiative: an action to strengthen “neighborhoods one main street at a time.” The stretch of Broadway from Olympic to 7th Street came alive with street performers, cultural programming, site-specific visual arts installations, pop-up storefronts, plein air painters, dancers, musicians, bike rentals and video projections. As LA's homegrown innovator for the activation of public space, Pop-Up Broadway was curated and produced by CARS. The project came together in less than a month with the cooperation of local artists and community groups. Pop-Up Broadway used the new public spaces created by Councilmember José Huizar’s Bringing Back Broadway coupled with existing businesses, empty storefronts, construction fences, blank walls as well as the traditional public spaces of the sidewalk. Pop-Up Broadway exemplifies the readily available Los Angeles creativity that encourages Angelenos to view streets as a canvas for experimentation, turning streets into public spaces that reflect the vibrancy of our city.
